Article 168 Constitution of Legislatures in States.
This article creates a Legislature for every State. It consists of the Governor and one or two Houses. Where there are two Houses, one is the Legislative Council and the other is the Legislative Assembly. Where there is only one House, it is the Legislative Assembly. Only some States have a Legislative Council.
- (1) For every State there shall be a Legislature which shall consist of the Governor, and— (a) in the States of 2*** Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, 4*** Madhya Pradesh, 6*** Maharashtra, Karnataka, 9*** Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, two Houses; (b) in other States, one House.
- (2) Where there are two Houses of the Legislature of a State, one shall be known as the Legislative Council and the other as the Legislative Assembly, and where there is only one House, it shall be known as the Legislative Assembly.
